My 1989 635 has just failed its mot on rusty/leaking auto transmission pipes, that run to and from the oil cooler. The pipes are avaliable from BMW for about £85. The question is, what sort of job is this going to be for me to to do by myself ?. What sort of problems may i come across. Any advice would be apreciated.

I've got the same problem on mine although it was a warning not a fail.

According to my mechanic its not a tough job but they do thread thir way
around various bits and pieces on their way to the radiator at the front. You
make need to remove a few extra bits to get the new pipes in or you might
be lucky and be able to work them in.

You are going to have to drain the gearbox oil obviously so its worth
replacing the filter in the gearbox at the same time.

Interested to know how you get on.

Have now replaced the cooler pipes + gearbox filter & oil change. very messy job due to the leak, but otherwise no problem. word of warning though i managed to shear off a couple of the studs that hold the clamps onto the pipes, thease cannot be replaced as they are part of the chassis. + one of the gearbox sump bolt heads sheared off.(had to drill it out).I advise soaking with plus gas for a day or so & wire brushing the threads before attempting to undo them.
